Why does concrete crack?

It is quite common for new concrete slabs to exhibit cracks, even though the presence of such imperfections may not be particularly enjoyable. There are a variety of cracks :

Surface cracks - Hairline Cracks because of rapid moisture loss, also known as “plastic shrinkage,” before it dries

Expansion cracks: These cracks occur when concrete slabs expand outwards due to heat and don't have enough space to expand

Heaving cracks: These cracks occur in cold climates where freeze-thaw cycles are common.
